Welcome to the website of the conference ‘Inspiring change: the governance of school education systems’ which took place in Brussels on 17-18 May 2018.
Since the beginning of 2016, the ET2020 Working Group Schools has focused on the governance of school education and how systems can address the serious challenges of quality and equity in order to strive for better learning outcomes for all young people. At the heart of this lies the concept of 'schools as learning organisations' within school education as an integrated 'learning system'. It is founded on the belief that policy makers and other stakeholders have the capacity to work better together towards shared goals and make positive change happen based on evidence, reflection and shared practice, ensuring a legacy for policy reform.
The Working Group developed a new package of guiding principles and contemporary policy examples, examining the capacity for sustainable systemic change, particularly in the areas of: quality assurance; continuity and transitions in learner development; teachers and school leaders; and, networks in school education. It sets out a vision for school education systems that can help define shared values within a European Education Area (pdf versions are available on the ‘About’ page).
This conference provided an important opportunity for European policy-makers and stakeholders to engage in the continuing debate on the governance of school education and identify ways in which these outputs can best be used. It included a number of interactive opportunities for networking, peer learning and national action planning in order to discuss possible future approaches in different system contexts.
